Smoke-Free Homes is a UBC subsidiary of Engineers Without Borders Canada that focuses on providing rural Guatemalan communities with eco-stoves to mitigate the effects of open-fire cooking. Over the past two years, the Smoke-Free Homes team has designed an efficient eco-stove, gained stakeholders, undertaken research projects and done field work in rural Guatemala to implement the use of our stoves. Through dedication, hard-work and collaboration with Rotary East Guatemala, the Smoke-Free Homes team has successfully implemented nine stoves.
Project Overview
Management Team
The purpose of this team is to raise awareness about the adverse consequences of open-fire cooking in rural Guatemala. We also enable the process of gathering funds for the project through sponsorships, donations, and event fundraising. Currently, we are collaborating with Rotary Club East Guatemala to develop a sustainable business model to provide families with access to eco-stoves without relying on support from external organizations.
Eco-Stove Design Team
The purpose of this team is to improve the current Eco-Stove model using the engineering design process through input from Guatemalan stakeholders, lab testing, and design modifications. We want to increase the long-term adoption of our stove by Guatemalan families by designing a stove that fits their needs and cultural background while working with members of the community to achieve this.

Mission & Vision
Engineers Without Borders Smoke-Free Homes, in partnership with Rotary East Guatemala, aims to address the critical health, economic, and environmental issues caused by open-fire cooking in rural Guatemala. Open-fire stoves emit smoke equivalent to 400 cigarettes per hour, leading to respiratory infections, eye damage, and heart and lung disease, especially impacting women and children under five. These stoves also contribute to Guatemala’s high deforestation rates, as they require significant firewood. Our engineered solution, the “eco-stove,” is a smoke-reducing, firewood-efficient stove constructed with cinder blocks, bricks, and galvanized steel tubing. By enhancing combustion efficiency, cutting emissions, and adapting to community feedback, we aim to create a safer, more sustainable household cooking environment. Additionally, our venture seeks to establish a sustainable business model, providing access to eco-stoves and raising global awareness about clean cooking.
